According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), climate change is now impacting the global hydrological cycle. As a result, about half of the world is now experiencing more flooding than usual, while one-third of the planet is facing increased drought.

Within a matter of days, North Africa received a year’s worth of rainfall. So typically, dry areas like Niger, Chad, Sudan, Libya, and Egypt have received more than 400% of their typical rainfall since July.

While the hot, dry Sahara Desert was flooding, the typically wet Northeastern United States was experiencing an extreme drought. The 2024 Jennings Creek Fire burned 5,000 acres while record-breaking brush fires hit New York City and New Jersey. Rising temperatures and prolonged dry spells have heightened fire risks, straining emergency response efforts.

Scientists say that climate change also increases the frequency and intensity of earthquakes. In early 2025, the Greek island of Santorini experienced close to 8,000 earthquakes in just over two weeks, with officials evacuating 11,000 people by sea. In January 2025, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the remote region of Shigatse in Tibet, near the Himalayas. Authorities say at least 126 people died, 188 others were injured, and 46,000 were displaced.

Our Most Gracious Supreme Master Ching Hai (vegan) explains that such disasters are being caused by the mass murder of billions of innocent animal-people each year for so-called “food.” “It’s easy to see the many forms of environmental harm that are linked to this killing industry, which we call animal-people meat consumerism: the mass murder of billions, billions of innocent animal-peoples’ lives. The vegan diet protects us inside out, starting immediately, so that all kinds of calamities will avoid us, stay away from us.”
